Yourname.blogspot.com does not look nearly as professional as yourname.com. Having your own domain name can give you a sense of control over your blog. If you ever change your mind and decide that you no longer want a free blog, but rather a blog on a paid domain, then you might have problems transferring it to a different domain. Very often you might be forced to delete your existing blog and start a new one on your own domain. You will also have to think of ways to encourage your regular readers to start visiting your new blog.
